This course is dedicated to the insurance profession in general and to you, in particular, for your commitment to understanding ethical decision-making and acting ethically in your profession and your life as a Property/Casualty Agent/Broker and or a Life/Health Agent/Broker. Legislators and regulators have attempted to take the task of the philosopher to make what is already complex and create confusion with penalties! To tell someone to make ethical decisions is like telling him or her to be happier, healthier, and slimmer. It's not much help to merely repeat the objective; what you need is a plan for achieving the objective. Living an ethical life personally and professionally could use a simplified discussion so that the essential elements of ethical decision-making are transparent and productive. That is the journey you are about to take. We're going to dissect the term ‘ethical'. Then, we'll identify the component players in business, the players who have potentially conflicting objectives. As we review the parts that these players play and their objectives, we find both potential for conflict and potential for convergence of goals. Then, we're going to review recent history in the insurance industry which has caused the increased emphasis on identifying ethical behavior and potential ethical violations. Then, we'll put it all together.
